Our next club to be featured in our Club in the Spotlight series is rugby union side Bradford Salem RFC.
After playing their first match as Salem Rugby FC in September 1924, the club added Bradford to its name two years later.
Now, the club have 450 members in their adult section alone, and boast sides ranging from Under-6s to the veteran’s team, including a Ladies senior side.
The club’s current head coach is ex-England international Dan Scarbrough, and in 2015, their men’s senior side won both the Yorkshire Division 2 League and the Yorkshire Challenge Shield.
We asked Club Development Officer and coach Noel Hayden a few questions about Bradford Salem.
What is the best thing about your club?
Whilst asking all of our members to take part, our club aims to deliver a fantastic experience for everyone who visits us. Whether you are a player, supporter, a new junior or just a social visitor, Bradford Salem provides a fun and welcoming environment to all and hopes that you will keep coming back for more.
What are you most proud of at your club?
Since 2015, we have been creating links with both the local community and schools to provide rugby as part of PE programs. We provide rugby for anyone interested in taking part in a fun social activity in a family friendly place.
What type of person gets involved with your club?
All types; members of the local community support us by playing, providing support, running events and spectating at games. Families have a juniors section featuring players from seven-year-old boys and girls to 16-year-olds, all supported by parents and volunteers. We have a new female section made up of new and ‘old’ players and a men’s section competing in Yorkshire 1 League rugby. Added to this, we have a vibrant social club with regular club events. Our coaches work with many local schools to help deliver rugby as part of PE programs and we have also established links with Bradford University students.
Do you have any upcoming activities or events?
We have a children’s Christmas party on the 24th of December. Our juniors play Rugby every Sunday whilst the Men’s team play every Saturday. We have a Women’s Rugby Welcome Event coming up on the 28th of January.
What makes your club unique?
Bradford Salem RFC is a club that is open to all: players, non-players, volunteers, spectators, young and old, boys and girls, social and serious. We aim to create an enjoyable experience for everyone.
Why is your club important to you?
Bradford Salem introduced me to many friends when I was a player. These friends have remained long after I stopped playing. The club runs to make sure all members enjoy themselves and make new friends along the way.
