Our next Club in the Spotlight is Barnsley Ladies RUFC.
Whilst Barnsley RUFC was founded in 1902, the Ladies’ side only formed in 2014, but that has not stopped them from achieving some great things.
The team are currently top of the Women’s National Challenge 1 North League having made an unbeaten start, and the junior side are also through to the last 16 of the RFU Junior Cup.
We asked the team manager Stuart Bennett some questions about Barnsley Ladies RUFC.
What are you most proud of at your club?
Barnsley Ladies were formed in 2014. Since then the team has gone from strength to strength. In 2015, they applied to join the National Challenge 2 North East league. They won the league, going through the season unbeaten and also reached the final of the RFU Women’s Junior Cup but lost to Drybrook Ladies.
For their efforts, they were Rugby World Magazine’s Team of the Month for January and were shortlisted for Women’s Team of the Year at the National Rugby awards. This season, after being promoted to National Challenge 1 North, they find themselves top of the league and once again unbeaten.
What type of person gets involved with your club?
We have a range of players from all walks of life. The seniors’ ages range from 18 to 39 and we have players at Under 13, Under 15 & Under 18 levels.
How do new members get involved?
Come down to one of our training sessions! Seniors train Tuesdays between 6pm and 7.30pm, and the U13s, U15s & U18s train Wednesdays at 6pm.
If there is one thing that you hope your members take from being a part of your club, what would it be?
A great sense of community and team spirit. It’s a great place, friendly and fun!
What makes your club unique?
Whilst we do also have a men’s team, the ladies are looked on as equals within the club.
