In conjunction with our Club in the Spotlight series, we also want to showcase Yorkshire’s volunteers in sport. First up is Jeremy Hudson.
Jeremy currently volunteers as Under 13s coach at Morley Cricket Club and is also on the club committee.
Jeremy has always been a huge cricket fan and wanted to do something different with his passion for the sport. “I have loved cricket all my life and used to play until my children came along,” he said. “Now they have grown up I decided to try and get involved again and give coaching a try.
“I just got in touch with my local club and asked if I could help. As a result I now coach, fundraise and play.”
Morley Cricket Club has teams ranging from Under 9s all the way up to the senior sides, and Jeremy’s Under 13s compete in the Heavy Woollen District Junior Cricket League. But it is not league success that makes Jeremy feel the most fulfilled about his volunteering.
He said: “My proudest moment was securing a sponsorship last year for the juniors so they could all have matching hats and jumpers. Anybody would have thought we had just won the league.”
For Jeremy, the reason he volunteers is simple. He said: “I can help the juniors coming through and keep involved in a game I love. You can volunteer and spend as much time as you want helping out each week but I normally spend a couple of hours at training, a couple more on match days and also in between trying to raise funds.”
