Sailing clubs and watersports centres across South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire will be opening their doors to visitors in May.
Whether you are looking for a new way to get active or searching for something to enjoy as a family, sailing could be your answer. It can be as physical or as relaxing as you want to make it; you can sail with others or on your own; do it competitively or at your leisure. The choice is yours and during Push the Boat Out week (13-21 May) many of our local sailing clubs and centres will be inviting you to give it a go.
“Sailing is a very accessible sport,” said Alistair Dickson, RYA Director of Sport Development. “But many people aren’t aware of the opportunities available close to them or how affordable the sailing and windsurfing can be, even for the whole family. Push the Boat Out is all about making that connection and we’re delighted to have so many venues taking part this year.”
The nine day nationwide event will see hundreds of people taking part in the sport with open days or taster sessions at sailing clubs and centres across the country. Over 90,000 people have taken part in Push the Boat Out events since the annual festivities began back in 2012 and more sailing clubs and centres than ever are taking part this year.
Clubs and centres taking part in our region include:
Ripon Sailing Club
Otley Sailing Club
Leeds Sailing & Activity Centre
Yeadon Sailing Club
White Rose Sailing Association (Ripon)
Pugneys Country Park
Halifax Sailing Club
Craven Sailing Club (Skipton)
Pennine Sailing Club (near Huddersfield)
Scammonden Water Sailing Club
Ulley Sailing Club (Sheffield)
Rotherham Sailing Club

All you need for any of the Open Days or ‘have a go’ sessions are a change of clothes, soft soled shoes and a towel, the clubs and centres will provide everything else. Although many events are free, booking is essential for some of the activities. Refreshments will be available and a friendly smile guaranteed as BBQs and other social activities also take place to give newcomers a warm welcome.
Go on, Push the Boat Out and give it a go!!
