Our next Club in the Spotlight is Sandal Girls Rugby Union club, otherwise known as Sandal Beasts.

Media Manager and Coach, John Ledger, got in touch to tell us about this rapidly growing club.

What is the best thing about your club?

We pride ourselves on our inclusivity – girls of all abilities, shapes and sizes are welcomed to come and train and play a fun team sport in a safe and happy environment.

What are you most proud of at your club?

We started the girls section in February 2015 with six pupils from Crofton Academy. This quickly grew and we know have over 60 girls training each Wednesday for teams run at under-13, under-15 and under-18 levels. We have also just started an open age team for women of all ability which features many of the junior girls’ mums, most of who have never played contact sport before.

What type of person gets involved with your club?

Girls of all backgrounds, sizes and abilities – few of our girls had played rugby at all two years ago and all are now completely hooked. Our motto is ‘Act like a lady, play like a Beast’!

Do you have any upcoming activities or events?

We train every Wednesday at Sandal RUFC and play matches on Sunday afternoon – all new girls welcomed. Our senior team, the Sandal Warriors, train on Monday evenings (6-7.30)

How do new members get involved?

Come along to a training session on Wednesday (6 til 7.30pm for under 13s and under-15s; 6 til 8 for under-18s). Bring appropriate clothing and footwear. If you let us know you’re coming we may be able to loan studded boots.

If there is one thing that you hope your members take from being a part of your club, what would it be?

Experience the fun, camaraderie and fitness that comes from playing a team sport.

Why is your club important to you?

We’re not unique but we are very good at what we do – giving girls an opportunity to experience the benefits of physical exercise in a fun and welcoming environment and playing and training in accordance with rugby’s core values.

Why is your club important to you?

Because we’re the living embodiment that #thesegirlscan!
