Schools from Kirklees topped the medal table at the West Yorkshire School Games summer festival, in association with Leeds Beckett University.

Many schools from across the district competed, claiming 14 medals in total, including five gold, three silver and six bronze, won across nine different sports on an action packed day at the University’s Headingley campus.

Around 1,200 young people from more than 90 different schools competed for the chance to be crowned West Yorkshire champions in athletics, boccia, new age kurling, tennis, tri-golf, tag rugby, netball, gymnastics and cycling.

Leeds schools came second with nine medals; there were eight medals for schools representing Calderdale; five for Wakefield schools; and three medals for schools in Bradford.

As well as the competition, there was also the opportunity for two schools from each district to sample the summer festival experience in an activity zone led by Leeds Beckett University, including American football and tennis.

The festival was opened by rising triathlon star, Georgia Taylor-Brown, Sport & Exercise Science graduate from Leeds Beckett University and winner of a silver medal at the World Triathlon Series event in Leeds last month. The opening ceremony also included performances from Carr Manor Community School and St. John Fisher School.

The School Games is a National Lottery funded initiative to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport.

Nigel Harrison, CEO of Yorkshire Sport Foundation said: “Well done to all the young people who competed in the West Yorkshire School Games summer festival.  They did themselves and their districts proud, all under the watchful eye of a great team of volunteers and officials.”

Sally Nickson – Head of Sport & Active Lifestyles, Leeds Beckett University, added: “Leeds Beckett University is proud to have hosted the West Yorkshire School Summer Games as part of our growing partnership with Yorkshire Sport Foundation – who organised a wonderful sporting event that the region can be proud of.

“It was a privilege to have over 1,200 talented children, teachers, supporters, friends and families take part in the games.”

“I’d also like to thank Leeds Beckett alumna Georgia Taylor-Brown who served as the guest of honour for the games,

“Georgia is an inspiration to the city and captured the hearts of thousands when she came second in the 2018 Leeds World Triathlon Series and I am sure she will have even more success in the future.”
