Barnsley College claim South Yorkshire crown

Barnsley College were crowned South Yorkshire College Games Champions on Tuesday as they came out on top at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

More than 120 students from seven colleges competed in five different sports, with points being awarded in each discipline to give an overall score.

Barnsley College emerged victors after competing in netball, dodgeball, table tennis, badminton, Boccia and New Age Kurling.

Doncaster College were runners up with Sheffield College in third.  Other colleges competing included Dearne Valley College, Rotherham College of Art and Technology, Thomas Rotherham College and UTC Don Valley.

Yorkshire Sport Foundation CEO Nigel Harrison was delighted with the event.

He said: “Congratulations to Barnsley College on becoming South Yorkshire Champions and thank you to all of the other local colleges that took part.

“It was great to see all the students getting involved in so many different sports competitively at such a prestigious venue.”

David Penney, Performance and Athlete Development Manager at Barnsley College said: “It was a very well organised tournament played in a very competitive spirit and a good atmosphere amongst the students.

“It made it into an enjoyable day for all the participating students and colleges.  We’re really looking forward to the summer College Games.”
