Young athletes from across South Yorkshire came together at Cannon Hall this week to compete in the School Games cross country finals.

More than 500 pupils from 39 schools represented Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield in six different races.  The schools earned their place following individual district finals in recent weeks.

Sheffield schools dominated the event, winning each race, and taking home 13 of the 18 medals.  Points were awarded for each pupil’s finishing place with the lowest team score declared the winners in each of the races.

Barnsley schools won one silver and two bronze medals, whilst there was a bronze medal apiece for schools representing Doncaster and Rotherham.

The finals were organised by Yorkshire Sport Foundation, the County Sports Partnership for South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. Chief Executive, Nigel Harrison, commented: “The cross country finals are always a great spectacle, with so many children competing and supported by friends, family and their teachers.

“I’d like to congratulate all those who took part, and give a special thanks to the team of volunteers without whom events like this simply wouldn’t be possible.”

The next School Games finals in South Yorkshire will be the winter festival held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on Friday 22 March, where up to 1,000 schoolchildren will compete across eight different sports.
