School Games sports days are back for 2021!

The School Games sports day is returning for 2021, and it’s inspired by some of the fantastic sporting action coming our way this summer.

With the pandemic meaning it hasn’t been possible to host School Games events throughout the current academic year, it once again means no traditional summer festival in South Yorkshire or West Yorkshire. But, just as in 2020, there’s still the opportunity for schools to be part of something big.

Taking place on Tuesday 6 July (South Yorkshire) and Thursday 8 July (West Yorkshire), primary schools from the two counties will be able to take part in a summer sports day, with sporting challenges linked to the big summer events of the year, including the Olympics, Euro 2020, Wimbledon and the Rugby League World Cup. There’s also a warm-up activity, and a performance to give that big event feel to proceedings.

The challenges will be posted on YouTube, meaning schools can join in live or when suits them. There’s then the option to submit scores, with prizes for the schools who best demonstrate the School Games values of determination, teamwork and passion.

In 2020, more than 12,000 young people took part, and Yorkshire Sport Foundation Events Manager, Emma Binnersley, is thrilled at the prospect of another sports day.

“With such a huge summer of sport ahead, we wanted to make sure the children in South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire could feel part of it,” said Emma.

“Of course, we’d love to be hosting the usual festivals, but this way allows even more young people to be involved in something running throughout their county. We were blown away by the numbers of children involved last year, and we hope this year will see similar numbers.

Research from Sport England tells us that the pandemic has impacted on children’s activity levels, with sporting activities seeing significant decreases. We also know that enjoyment plays a huge part in children wanting to be active, and we’re confident these activities will be a fantastic way to get smiles on children’s faces.”
