Children and young people
Our work to support children and young people is focused around creating and ensuring positive experiences and environments. We want to provide the opportunity for every child and young person to experience the enjoyment and benefits that being active can bring.
We aim to support the Physical Literacy of all children and young people to create a positive relationship with movement and physical activity.
We work with and support a wide range of partners to increase opportunities for children and young people to become more active more often. This means increasing the number of young people involved in movement, physical activity and sport both in educational and community settings.
To do this we will:
-
Support the development of positive experiences for children and young people from early years to further and higher education.
-
Support the development of safe practice in sport and physical activity for young people to provide a safe place to play.
-
Help to create opportunities for young people to achieve the Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines of 30 active minutes in school every day and 30 active minutes outside of school
-
Promote Youth Voice and Youth Engagement in the design and delivery of opportunities for children and young people.
-
Support partner organisations to tackle inequalities that provide barriers to young people accessing sport and physical activity.
-
Influence and provide a connection between education establishments, access to their facilities and community opportunities for young people.
-
Support the development of young leaders in physical activity and sport to empower and inspire others.
Areas of Work
Opening Schools Facilities (OSF) is a funding programme to meet the goals of the Government’s School Sport and Activity Action Plan. The aim is to help schools to open their existing sport facilities, including school swimming pools outside of the school day for a broader range of sport and physical activity.
Funding from the Department of Education will allow schools to develop their assets, provide support for their workforce, create positive experiences for pupils and their community and create and develop connections between school and physical activity providers.
Supporting partners to use physical activity and sport with 0-5 year olds and their families, to provide the best start in life for children.
Raising awareness of the importance of physical activity in the Early Years and working with organisations and practitioners to enhance physical development of young children.
This not only enhances the chances of children being active as they get older but provides social and emotional development as well as school readiness.
We work to connect physical activity into wider health and wellbeing agendas across the network in South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire.
This includes some bespoke projects/programmes as well as supporting wider outcomes such as mental wellbeing, obesity and anti-social behaviour which impact children across the districts.
It also includes connecting and providing support for organisations who may work with the most vulnerable young people in society.
Supporting colleges to develop opportunities for a wider range of students to be physically active, as well as utilising college students to inspire others to become active within their community as leaders and influencers.
Programmes have included sports leadership and ambassador training as well as influencing targeted groups of students to become more active on a regular basis on college sites across districts.
