Free Active Bystander workshops
Help create a safer, more welcoming environment in your club or organisation with our free Active Bystander workshops.
Have you ever witnessed someone being bullied, harassed, abused or treated unfairly and wondered whether you should step in? Perhaps you've questioned how others would respond if it happened to you.
Our interactive workshops give staff, volunteers and participants the confidence and practical skills to recognise inappropriate behaviour and respond safely and effectively. Participants explore why people do or don't intervene, learn simple techniques for supporting others, and discover how small actions can make a big difference.
By the end of the session, attendees will be better equipped to:
- Recognise discrimination, bullying, harassment and abusive behaviour
- Understand the barriers that prevent people from intervening
- Intervene safely and appropriately in challenging situations
- Support others and promote a positive culture
- Help create safer, more inclusive environments where everyone feels valued and respected
Whether you're involved in sport, physical activity, community groups or the workplace, Active Bystander training empowers people to move from being a witness to being part of the solution.

Ways to access the training
Our preferred delivery method is an interactive, face-to-face session, as we find participants engage more fully with the content. Sessions include practical, scenario-based activities and may incorporate videos to support learning. We typically recommend groups of 6 to 20 participants, although we can be flexible depending on your circumstances.
Most topics require a minimum of 90 minutes to explore effectively. Some sessions can be delivered in a shorter timeframe, while others, such as our Anti-Racism workshop, benefit from the full 90 minutes. If you can allocate up to three hours, we can explore the topic in greater depth and provide more opportunities for discussion and reflection.
Venue check-list
For in-person delivery, we simply ask that you provide a suitable room with:
- A screen or projector with sound
- Seating for participants (with or without tables)
- Space for occasional interactive activities
Classroom, boardroom, cabaret, or lecture-style layouts all work well. If providing a venue or equipment is difficult, please speak to us, as we can often help find a solution.
Online sessions
We also offer sessions online. These are designed to be as interactive as possible through chat discussions, polls, hand-raising activities, and breakout rooms where appropriate. We can also deliver webinar-style sessions if preferred, although we believe interactive participation provides the best learning experience.
Cost
All sessions are completely free of charge. This is made possible through support from Active Partnerships, funded by Sport England and The National Lottery, along with other partner organisations. There is no catch, although we may ask participants and booking organisations to provide feedback to help us improve and demonstrate the impact of our work.
