BetterPoints launches in West Yorkshire

BetterPoints West Yorkshire rewards people for making healthier, greener travel choices. From walking and cycling to using public transport, every active journey earns points, prizes and real rewards.

Open to anyone who lives, works or studies in West Yorkshire, this new app makes it easy (and rewarding) to travel more actively, cut carbon and boost wellbeing.

What is BetterPoints?

BetterPoints is a behaviour change app that turns sustainable actions into real-world rewards.

It’s been developed over 15 years and combines more than 40 evidence-based techniques to motivate, reward and measure positive behaviour.

Using the free app, you can:

  1. Earn BetterPoints for walking, wheeling, cycling, running, using public transport and attending local events.

  2. Collect BetterTickets to enter regular prize draws.

  3. Redeem rewards* with local and national businesses or donate your points to charity.

  4. Measure your impact and see how your actions help reduce carbon and improve wellbeing.

Why it matters

Every car-free journey makes our region healthier, happier, safer, more connected and more sustainable.

BetterPoints data is aggregated and anonymised, helping local authorities like ours make informed decisions about transport, infrastructure and health without ever sharing personal information.

When Sheffield ran its first-year programme:

  • 15,000 residents joined

  • 4.6 million sustainable trips were recorded

  • 2,000 drivers used their cars on fewer days per week

  • Over 1 kiloton of CO₂ was saved

About BetterPoints West Yorkshire

This 15-month pilot, funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), aims to:

  • Engage the adult population across the region

  • Increase journeys made on foot, by bike and using public transport

  • Support local businesses and charities through reward partnerships

  • Provide data insights to inform regional transport and health strategies

How to get involved

  • Download the app from Google Play or the App Store

  • Register with your personal email address (Council employees use the code caldcc for a more targeted experience)

  • Celebrate success by sharing your stories and encouraging others to take part.
