Building a sporting system where everyone belongs
Black History Month may have ended last month, but the conversations it sparks matter year-round. It's a chance to celebrate the achievements, resilience and contributions of Black communities across the UK, and, now that October has passed, a moment to reflect on the challenges that remain and the action needed to build a more equitable future, every month of the year.
This year’s theme, Honouring Our Communities, resonated strongly with Sporting Equals' work. Communities are where people find belonging, celebrate their identity, challenge barriers and create opportunities for the next generation to thrive.
For Viveen Taylor, Chief Executive Officer of Sporting Equals, this was her first Black History Month in the role. She's proud to lead an organisation that's spent more than 25 years championing race equality and inclusion in sport and physical activity. Since joining in September, she has been inspired by the team's passion and the commitment of the community organisations they work alongside every day.
In her blog, Viveen reflects on the progress made while staying honest about what remains. Sport can bring people together, improve wellbeing, and create opportunities far beyond the field of play, but those benefits are still not experienced equally. Closing that gap takes sustained commitment from everyone in the sector.
