Opening School Facilties case study: Fieldhead Primary Academy

Fieldhead Primary Academy (Kirklees) provided a multi-sport club twice a week throughout the year in addition to several holiday activities during half-term breaks.

The school engaged the community with flyers, assemblies and door to door promotion, in addition to having a local student working as a community volunteer to recruit. The school also bought refreshments from providers within the local community.

Local business owners have suggested a decrease in anti-social behaviour in and around the shops due especially on the evenings / days of the school clubs. The school have received feedback from the parents' community group who have seen a decrease in local anti-social behaviour from children that had engaged in the clubs. Parents attending clubs also said they felt their children were safe from potential crime or influencing from older children by engaging in positive activities.

A parent commented: "My son and daughter attend the holiday clubs. These are a massive help to us as a family. Especially with this allowing me to pick up a few hours work and provide me with childcare.

"As a single mum this helps me so much, without this I cannot pick up extra hours and the children will be at home which increases cost with electricity, food bills. I know my kids are safe and at the holiday club being active and keeping fit."

A pupil in year six added: “I love the youth clubs. Every time it's on I look forward to getting home, having my tea, getting sorted and getting up to school, and on Saturdays I wake up excited where previously I was bored on Saturdays.

"I love sports, so I enjoy all the sports and games that we do at youth club. I feel safe at youth club, it's a familiar environment at my school and I know the staff are there to look after us. When the club isn't on...we like to walk down into Birstall and mess around down there. We get bored as there is nothing to do really on the estate.”
