New study finds physical activity could transform inpatient mental health care

SE PA and Mental Health

A new international study, 'An international consensus on strategies for implementing physical activity in inpatient mental health services: A nominal group technique',  has highlighted the importance of embedding physical activity into inpatient mental health services to support people living with severe mental illness.

Researchers identified key strategies to make physical activity more accessible and effective, including strong leadership commitment, dedicated facilities, workforce training, and creating a positive culture around movement and wellbeing.

The study also found practical, achievable actions such as protecting time for physical activity, listening to service user feedback, co-designing programmes, and regularly evaluating services.

The findings reinforce that improving physical activity opportunities in mental health settings requires both organisational support and person-centred approaches.
