ROKT Foundation are helping children manage their money through climbing the walls!

ROKT Foundation has received funding to deliver half day taster sessions to schools to support children in year’s five and six to learn more about budget management and the cost of living. The aim is to introduce children and young people into financial planning in a fun and creative way, that helps children understand money management through both classroom based and physical activities. In today’s society there is a feeling of loss of control over financial matters and a reliance on credit. With this creative programme, ROKT Foundation is engaging children early to help change that mindset.
The half day sessions include:
· An hour-long classroom-based session with a creative financial expert Michelle Hogan to understand things like, how to manage finances, the difference between credit cards and debit cards. how to budget, the cost of corner shopping to supermarket shopping, understanding the difference between want and need and the real cost of items on credit.
· Children then take to the walls and play ‘Supermarket Sweep’ bouldering, purchasing items as they climb the bouldering walls, and see if they have managed to stick within their budget total up their purchases, whilst creating a healthy meal for 6.
· They look at profit and loss on the roped climbing walls, seeing if they can stay within their monthly salary as they pay for their rent, go shopping, save for a holiday, with the aim of getting to the top of the wall whilst staying in budget.
· Finally they enter the ‘Antique Shop’ Escape Room where they buy antiques and then buy and sell to make a profit – harnessing the children’s business and entrepreneurial skills.
These free half day sessions have been a huge success with local schools and with more funding ROKT Foundation will be expanding to support not just Calderdale but Kirklees and Bradford schools too.
