Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing
It was great to see some of you on our April Sport Welfare Connect network session. We welcomed Adam from Papyrus and Deirdre from Leeds Mind Suicide Bereavement Service who gave really informative presentations.
We can help you to support your staff, coaches, volunteers and participants with their mental health and wellbeing in a number of ways:
-
We can deliver a workshop online or at your club to give guidance around looking after your mental health.
-
We can signpost you to, or connect you with, national and local sources of support.
-
We can help you to promote national campaigns, like Mental Health Awareness Week which takes place from 12 to 18 May. The theme this year is ‘community’.
-
You could also access this training from UK Coaching and Mind, which costs £15 per person.

Mind’s Safe and Effective Practice Guidance
Sport, physical activity and movement can be a valuable tool that helps us to maintain good mental health and wellbeing.
But any activity can and should be tailored to our individual needs and work for our physical and mental health. Not against it.
That’s why we're supporting Mind's new guidance on safe and effective practice for those delivering physical activity and mental health programmes.
With more programmes taking place across the country – in local parks to mental health inpatient wards - the guidance will provide deliverers with the confidence to safely and effectively support the mental health of participants as well as those involved in delivery.

Sport Welfare Connect – 3 July
Our next Sport Welfare Connect networking session is themed around issues affecting young people. We’ll have a talk on vaping from The Base, among other things.
What issues are affecting children and young people at your club or activity? Let us know in advance and we can look at including content on it in the session.
Our July event takes place from 6pm to 7.30pm and you can book a place here.

Safe Use of Social Media and Online Messaging
We’re often asked for guidance around social media and messaging by clubs who want to ensure they are communicating with children and young people safely and appropriately.
Leeds Safeguarding Children Partnership have produced a useful poster which you can display in your premises or on your website to remind staff and volunteers about key online safety points. You can find out more and download the poster from this page.
FREE Child Exploitation Training
This free session is for sport clubs and organisations and is delivered by the Children’s Society and Ivison Trust.
-
Takes place online via Teams
-
10 June 2025 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm

Across the country, young people are being manipulated, sexually abused, forced to launder money and deal drugs. Exploitation isn't obvious. But it happens everywhere. Our sports volunteers, coaches, parents and carers are the eyes and ears on the ground and are often well placed to spot the signs that something might not be right for a child attending the sports club.
The team from the Children’s Society will speak about how we can work together to spot the signs of child exploitation and how we can report and stop this. Liz and Sarah from the Ivison Trust will raise awareness of the fantastic work they do to support children and families affected by criminal and sexual exploitation.
Offered as part of the Sport Welfare Officer network in partnership with Rise, Tees Valley Sport, Active Cumbria, North Yorkshire Sport, Yorkshire Sport Foundation, Active Chester, Active Lancashire, Greater Manchester Moving, and MSP Merseyside.

FREE Active Bystander Training
Have you ever witnessed an incident taking place and wondered if you should act or intervene? In that situation you are a bystander. If you do nothing you are a passive bystander but, if you decide to do something, you become an active bystander.
Our Active Bystander training looks at the reasons why people don’t intervene, and also gives you a ‘toolkit’ of skills to enable you to take action safely.
This training is specifically designed around racism and raises awareness of microaggressions, however the bystander tools can be used in any situation where someone is being bullied, harassed or abused.
We’re already delivering to Football Club Foundation Trusts, leisure centres, National Governing Bodies, and teams within the Local Authority.
Don’t miss out! Please get in touch with Nicola to find out more or book your session.
FREE Creating an Inclusive Environment session
As part of West Yorkshire Safeguarding Week which takes place from 23 to 27 June, Measha will be delivering a session on creating an inclusive environment. Learn how to identify barriers to participation, understand positive action, and create a more inclusive environment that attracts and retains diverse participants and volunteers.
The session takes place online, on Wednesday 25 June from 10am to 11am. Book a place here.

Dementia Action Week – 19 to 25 May
Earlier this year we were trained to be Dementia Friends by the Alzheimer’s Society. We gained insight into issues faced by people living with dementia, and learned how to make spaces more accessible.
Would you like to find out more about supporting participants at your club or group who have symptoms of dementia? Get in touch with your local Sport Welfare Officer and we’ll chat about how we can help. You can also become a Dementia Friend yourself by watching a video or accessing the training. Find out more here.
