Buddle Active Bystander Video
Back in March, the three of us had an amazing day at John Charles Centre for Sport with the fab team from Buddle. Along with some colleagues and friends, we were filmed talking about our experiences of racism and discrimination within sport, and what it means to be an ally and an active bystander.
The video is now available on YouTube. Please take a look here and share it within your organisations and networks.
If you’d like to know more about being an active bystander please get in touch. We’re delivering our free 90-minute in-person training widely across Yorkshire and the Humber, and the feedback we’re getting is overwhelmingly positive. Attendees have commented that the delivery is friendly and relaxed, and that the content is useful and easy to understand. Some attendees have contacted us afterwards to let us know that they’ve used what they learnt to deal with situations and incidents differently for a safer, more positive outcome.

Out of School Settings
The Department for Education is calling for evidence to inform the development of government policy on safeguarding in the out-of-school settings (OOSS) sector. This applies to extra-curricular clubs and activities, such as sports, holiday camps and activity centres, among other things. If you’d like to contribute to this, you can find out more on this website.
In addition to this, they have produced some free e-learning which is useful for anyone who runs, works or volunteers for an Out of School activity. You will need to register for an account in order to access it. It includes modules on health and safety, and safeguarding.

South Yorkshire – Asthma Friendly Clubs
In South Yorkshire, the Asthma Friendly Clubs Initiative is part of a broader effort led by the South Yorkshire Children and Young People’s Alliance to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people living with asthma.
Key Features of Asthma Friendly Clubs:
- Training for Coaches and Staff: Clubs receive training to recognise asthma symptoms, manage asthma attacks, and support children with asthma.
- Inclusive Environment: Clubs commit to creating a safe and welcoming space for children with asthma, including smoke-free policies.
- Asthma Register: Clubs maintain a register of members with asthma to ensure quick access to inhalers and appropriate care.
- Emergency Preparedness: Clubs are trained to respond effectively in case of an asthma emergency.
- Family Communication: Clubs keep families informed when a child uses their inhaler or experiences symptoms during activities.
Safe Sport Report
The five UK sports councils have published the Safe Sport report. Led by sport and for sport, the Safe Sport project and report emerged from a shared recognition of the challenges faced by the sport sector in keeping people safe.
