Iftar celebration event

YSF held an Iftar event at the Unity Centre in Rotherham for people to learn about Ramadan and break the day's fast.

This year we invited partners, friends and family to come together in South Yorkshire and share the importance of Ramadan and what it means to the local community, last year's event was held in Leeds.

On the panel of people sharing their experiences were Maysoon Shafiq, Rotherham's Chaplaincy Team Lead and Head of Islamic Advice for the National NHS Muslim Network, Raja Khan from Rotherham Friends Indeed and a spokesperson from Islamophobia Awareness. The panel was chaired by YSF's Tahir Akram.

The panel shared their insight and experiences of the challenges and benefits the community experiences.

The Adhaan (call to pray) was performed for the Maghrib prayer which also indicated the breaking of the fast.

After prayers, a traditional meal was served and allowed everyone to learn more about each other, and the value of shared experiences.

Gayle Elvidge, our Director for South Yorkshire said: "Sport has an incredible power to bring people together, it also has the power to challenge injustice and be a force for good.

"That's why at Yorkshire Sport we continue our work to tackle inequalities and make sure people facing the biggest barriers can enjoy being active. Our work with the Yorkshire and Humber Anti Racism in Sport and bystander training helps us understand each other.

"Just as sport has the power to unite, so too does sharing food together. Events like this help build on the spirit of friendship and compassion, and celebrate the wonderful diversity that makes our communities stronger."
