Opening School Facilities case study: Redscope Primary
The school provided a weekly open play session on school site where community users, younger siblings, children from neighbouring schools and families from the area could use school play equipment with adult supervision.
This allowed an increase in physical activity through informal play and games, with activities were supported by staff.
The school also hosted several themed community events throughout the year, which brought more people into the school and promoted wellbeing and physical health. The larger community events have been based around Halloween and Christmas, inviting all school children as well as the local community. The events were well attended and have had huge engagement allowing the school to promote other local activities and opportunities for children and families. Each event has used the outdoor provision, forest school ideas (e.g. campfires, scavenger hunts), sports hall and use of games and play equipment.
By having a theme, the school found events were more attractive to children and families and they were getting increased community engagement with people bringing relatives and children who go to other schools. These themed family events attracted children who would not usually sign up for sport activities and allowed them to engage in movement and play.
The school have seen many benefits to the project including the engagement of many parent volunteers at the events. This has led to an increase in volunteering for other activities in and out of school. The activities have further developed a relationship between school staff and the community.
The school have planned an Easter themed event for families as well as a school camp out in the summer term to provide local children an opportunity to experience camping.
