Opening School Facilities case study: Trinity Academy St Edwards
Trinity Academy St Edwards have moved to a new school site and wanted to explore how they could extend the use of their new facilities for students and the wider community.
The school told us that some students did not engage in physical activity outside of the school day. Recognising the need for community support and youth development, the school leadership decided to make their gymnasium, playing fields and multi-purpose spaces available after the school day.
The key elements included the provision of alternative activities as after school clubs, as well as external providers using facilities at the new school site on an evening. One Year 10 student remarked: “Before this programme, I didn’t really exercise after school, now I am active at least two or three times a week outside of school.”
Activities including a kickboxing club and dance sessions promoted communication, co-operation, and conflict resolution. Many participants reported feeling more connected to their peers and confident in group settings.
By opening school facilities to the community, the initiative strengthened relationships between the school, parents, and local organisations. St Edward’s success demonstrates that schools can serve as valuable community hubs, offering benefits that extend beyond the classroom.
