‘Protect Where We Play’ campaign Launched

The Sport and Recreation Alliance has launched a new campaign called Protect Where We Play to highlight the potential risks to playing fields, pitches and sports facilities posed by the Government’s proposed planning reforms. 

New research has shown that playing fields and pitches deliver at least £2 billion in improved wellbeing every year and help keep almost four million people active. A campaign hub has been created which provides resources.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government' Devolution Bill is intended nded to brings more regional power. The bill includes Community Right to buy that will mean more local sports grounds will be saved by introducing a new ‘Sporting’ category protection of local assets preserving local character.

'Community Right to Buy' would mean communities will have the first opportunity to purchase local assets when they are put up for sale, and be given an extended 12-month period to raise funding.
