Sharing the Learning on health

The Sharing the Learning Partnership hosted their first conference of the year on Health Perspectives within Sport and Physical Activity in the Yorkshire region.

The partnership is a group of organisations covering South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and the Humber who came together to help share learning across a variety of topics linked to whole of systems and place-based approaches to physical activity.

The event on 12 February 2025 brought together a variety of partners from across Yorkshire and Humber to discuss Health Perspectives within Sport and physical activity.

Guest speakers included

  • Tony Cooke (Chief Officer Health Partnerships, Leeds City Council),
  • Annie Holden (Strategic Lead Health, Active Partnership National Team),
  • David Crichton (Chief Medical Officer, NHS South Yorkshire ICB and GP Don Valley Health Care) and
  • Steve Brennan (Director of Partnerships, Kirklees ICB).

The event started with Tony Cooke sharing information on Leeds: a City where everyone can be more active more often.  This included what Leeds has to be proud of including the work of the Marmot City but also appreciating there is still more to do.   Physical activity is built into the Leeds Health and Wellbeing Strategy, and the Leeds Health and Care Plan to highlight the strategically significant impact of an active City and maintain momentum for future priorities.

We then moved onto Annie Holden talking about National perspectives and horizon scanning.  Information was shared about the NHS 10 Year Health Plan and key opportunities for change moving forwards including a national Pathways for Health consultation and risk reduction priorities to move from medical clearance to medical guidance.

David Crichton was looking at the Health care system and physical activity from a Regional and Community perspective.  This included the interconnection between Integrated Care Partnerships, Place priorities and hyper local partnership working. Action is required across all levels and the attendees were challenged to play their part in joining up work.

Finally, Steve Brennan spoke about understanding a local 'Place' and provided a Kirklees perspective - covering the sort of things he deals with on a day to day basis, the opportunities and threats for collaboration and how it feels to be advocating for physical activity amongst a whole host of priorities.
