Sheffield United Foundation to launch £500,000 Disability Sport Project with Firehouse Fitness
Sheffield United Community Foundation, in partnership with Firehouse Fitness, is proud to announce the launch of a new disability sport initiative designed to offer people in Sheffield the opportunity to engage in sport and physical activity in an inclusive and supportive environment.
The project, which aims to provide access to high-quality sports coaching and training for people with disabilities, is fully funded by Firehouse Fitness with a fantastic 5-year commitment announced. It will deliver a range of sports sessions tailored to people of all abilities, helping to foster physical fitness, build confidence, and encourage social inclusion as well as developing the future workforce.
The initiatives will be open to children from 5-years-old to adults who have a disability, with sessions to be held weekly at various locations across Sheffield, including local community centres and sports facilities. The sessions will be led by qualified coaches with expertise in inclusive sport, ensuring that each participant can take part in a way that is safe, enjoyable, and empowering. As a proud member of the Sheffield Inclusive Sport Network, this project will contribute towards the city’s Move More strategy.

“We are thrilled to launch this exciting new project in partnership with Firehouse Fitness.” Joe Williamson, COO, Sheffield United Community Foundation said. “Our mission has always been to provide accessible sporting opportunities for everyone in the local community, and this initiative is a fantastic step towards making sport more inclusive for young people with disabilities. Thanks to Firehouse Fitness, we can offer young people the chance to develop new skills, make friends, and experience the benefits of physical activity in a welcoming environment.”
The project will offer a wide range of sports activities, with plans to introduce other activities based on the consultation process of the beneficiaries. The Foundation is committed to ensuring that all sessions are fully accessible, with the necessary support in place to accommodate different needs.
Firehouse Fitness, a leading fitness provider in Sheffield, has long been committed to supporting community-based initiatives, and the partnership with Sheffield United Community Foundation is a natural extension of their values.
“We believe in the power of sport to bring people together and to create positive change in communities.” Neal Edwards, Firehouse Fitness said. “We’re delighted to support this project, and we’re excited to see the positive impact it will have on young people in Sheffield. This is an incredible opportunity for people to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of sport, regardless of their abilities.”The programme is designed not only to promote physical health but also to build social skills and self-confidence among participants. By fostering a sense of community, the initiative aims to break down barriers and ensure that every person feels included and valued.
