Asthma Friendly Clubs

In South Yorkshire, the Asthma Friendly Clubs Initiative is part of a broader effort led by the South Yorkshire Children and Young People’s Alliance to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people living with asthma.

Key Features of Asthma Friendly Clubs:

  • Training for Coaches and Staff: Clubs receive training to recognise asthma symptoms, manage asthma attacks, and support children with asthma.
  • Inclusive Environment: Clubs commit to creating a safe and welcoming space for children with asthma, including smoke-free policies.
  • Asthma Register: Clubs maintain a register of members with asthma to ensure quick access to inhalers and appropriate care.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Clubs are trained to respond effectively in case of an asthma emergency.
  • Family Communication: Clubs keep families informed when a child uses their inhaler or experiences symptoms during activities.

Accreditation Process:

Clubs can become officially recognized as "Asthma Friendly" by completing a 7-point charter, which includes:

  1. Staff training
  2. Asthma policy and register
  3. Inhaler access and storage
  4. Emergency inhaler availability
  5. Communication protocols
  6. Smoke-free commitment
  7. Ongoing awareness and support

Local Impact:

This initiative is active across Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, and Sheffield, with schools and clubs already participating. For example, Ballifield Community Primary School in Sheffield was the first in the city to receive asthma-friendly status

If you're part of a club or organisation in South Yorkshire and want to get involved, you can find more information and register through the South Yorkshire Healthier Together website
