Opening School Facilities case study: Richmond Hill Primary Academy (Doncaster)

Richmond Hill Primary Academy

This Opening School Facilities project transformed an existing outdoor space into environment where students could engage in nature-based activities, designed to develop physical skills, to help children to work together and benefit from time spent in the natural environment.

PE leads and the site manager led the work, supported by staff members who expressed an interest in outdoor learning and were provided training to support the sessions. Flyers promoted the new opportunities to the school community, including families and siblings of pupils.

The project successfully created access for pupils beyond the school day, keeping them active and engaged while learning new skills. Students embraced the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities that differed from their typical classroom  and 'sport' experiences. The alternative learning environment proved especially beneficial for students who sometimes struggle in traditional classroom settings.

Staff changeovers and the winter weather caused some difficulties in allowing access to the site. However, the project had a significant positive impact on after-school provision, particularly regarding pupils' mental health and wellbeing. Staff observed improved relationships between students who participated in the sessions, with increased cooperation and communication skills evident across different year groups.

The school plans to develop community partnerships to maximise the use of the space and strengthen connections between the school and other local organisations. Further development will focus on creating sustainable management practices for the forest school area and expanding the range of activities offered to meet diverse learning needs and interests.
